Happiness of the Beach

THE QUIET NATURE OF TRUE HAPPINESS

A couple of weeks ago, my husband asked an interesting question to the family. He wanted to know when was the last moment we felt totally content and happy.

Not just everyday happiness, but that one special moment that stands out in our lives.

Before I share our answers, I challenge you to take 3 minutes to think about this question yourself. What moment comes to mind for you?

My mother, now in her 70s, answered without hesitation.

She remembered a time on a beach nearly 50 years ago. She was lying on a sun lounger with her feet dipped in the sea. Even after all these years, the memory remained vivid.

My own answer came just as naturally.

I recalled a time in Mexico when I was lying on a beach under the dappled shade of a tree. Like my mother, I was also in my early 20s when this happened.

I found it fascinating that our answers were so similar.

Why these moments? Why not career achievements or big life milestones?

Why not the day we got that promotion or bought our first home?

Perhaps these answers challenge how we typically think about happiness.

Society often tells us that happiness comes from having more things, more money, more opportunities. We chase achievements and possessions, thinking they’ll make us happy.

But what if true happiness is actually found in moments of quiet?

What if it’s about being free from physical discomfort, when stress isn’t dominating our thoughts?

As Eric Jorgenson wrote, “Maybe happiness is not something you choose, but a highly personal skill that is learned like fitness and nutrition.”

For my mother and me, happiness was found in simple moments on a beach.

No phones buzzing with notifications. No deadlines looming.

Just the sound of waves and the warmth of sun on skin.

In these moments, we weren’t trying to be happy. We simply were.

I challenge you to think about what truly makes you happy.

Try to look beyond what society says should make you happy.

Could it be that happiness is actually our natural state?

Maybe with our busy lives and constant noise, happiness is just hidden, waiting to be rediscovered.

What if we don’t need to chase happiness at all?

What if we just need to create the right conditions for it – moments of stillness, presence, and peace?

Next time you feel completely content, notice what’s happening around you.

You might find that your happiest moments aren’t when you’re getting something new or reaching a goal.

They might be when you’re simply being present.

Perhaps happiness isn’t something we find outside ourselves, but something we uncover when we quiet the noise in our lives and within ourselves.
